Through Words and Lenses

Step into Dr. Muriel McClellan’s world, where stories unfold not only through writing but also through captured moments. This section offers a glimpse of the author’s journey, passions, and inspirations—told in both words and photographs.

The story of

Muriel McClellan, Ph.D.

Dr. Muriel McClellan blends together her knowledge as a psychologist with her love of wildlife photography. After completing her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Arizona State University, she went on to establish a successful counseling practice. Yet, she was drawn to nature and eventually took up wildlife photography.

To develop her photography skills she has traveled extensively and studied with well known photographers around the world.  She went to Africa to photograph elephants and lions and to Japan to photograph red crowned cranes and snow monkeys. She went to England to photograph puffins and to Lake Kerkini in Northern Greece to photograph Dalmatian pelicans.  One highlight of her travels was to spend a month in the Southern Ocean where South Georgia is located and to the Antarctica to photograph penguins.  Another highlight was to travel to Alaska and visit Lake Clark National Park and Preserve to photograph brown bears.

It was while she was photographing the penguins that she began to envision a book telling the story of penguins speaking to her and asking that she share their wisdom. The book would be full of photos capturing the beauty of the penguins in the wild. Each photo would have a caption combining her knowledge of psychology with ideas from the penguins that could be applied to one’s daily life. Advice from the Penguins is a result of that vision.  Soon after that Advice from the Grizzly Bears came to her with the same vision.

Dr. McClellan hopes that you will enjoy these delightful photos and that the captions will help you live a more satisfied life.

A Little About Me

I Grew Up In…

I grew up in the Phoenix area. Played on my high school golf team and loved swimming. I remember when Bethany Home Road was dirt and 32nd Street did not go through to Lincoln Drive. Getting to Scottsdale was a drive through orange groves as it was separate city where the businesses closed for the summer. Now, does that date me, or is it just a reflection on the growth of our communities? Or maybe both?

Hobbies

I have enjoyed many hobbies from golf, cooking and gardening. More recently I have taken up photography. My office has a collection of photographs from my trip to Africa (see photo of elephants). While I love wildlife photography (see photo of Red Crowned Crane in Japan), I still enjoy travel photography (see photo of bike and stairs in Split, Croatia).

Today

Today, I have two beautiful books—Advice from the Grizzly Bears and Advice from the Penguins. Both bring together my love for photography and writing, blending nature’s wisdom with inspiring reflections to encourage thought, joy, and connection.
